Wednesday Hodgepodge: Summer, School & Sports

1.  What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to actually doing?

Taking the kids to the drive-in movie theater. (Yes, we still have one about 30 minutes away!) It's the 3rd summer in a row that we haven't packed a cooler of snacks and seen a double feature. But there is still time as they're open weekends! Any good movies we should see?

2. Share a favorite memory of your own back -to-school days as a child.

I always looked forward to shopping for clothes, but especially school supplies. Even now I like shopping for supplies for our homeschool. I made a point of not going to Staples this year. Or even checking out Back-to-School ads. It's time to make space on the shelf and use what we have! Unless I can actually find a decent pencil sharpener...

3.  What's one chore or daily task you prefer doing 'old-school' ?

Dishes. I prefer not doing them at all, but. ::wink:: I have a dish washer, but I find that no matter how I arrange the dishes or how much I pre-rinse them or what soap I use, half are usually not clean. So, we hand wash and avoid all that frustration of dishes coming out of the dishwasher dirty.

4.  Share something you've learned in life through the 'school of hard knocks'.

Decisions have consequences...and sometime they hurt others, even if unintentionally. It's important to take time to reflect on decisions that effect/affect others, putting  yourself "in their shoes", before deciding.

5.  As a child, did you mostly bring or buy your lunch for school? What was your favorite thing to find in your lunchbox?

I ate lunch right at school. My parents did not have a lot of money when I was in elementary school and I received reduced fee lunch. Did your school have these divided trays? Memories! (We didn't have a choice of chocolate milk though...)

School lunches always seemed so much yummier as a child than they do as an adult. Pizza was my favorite, but looking back I know it wasn't GOOD pizza. And it was served with baked fries and salad with Italian dressing.

6. Football season is upon us which has me wondering... how big of a sports fan are you (not just football) ? On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being 'I scream at the players through my television screen' and 1 being 'is knitting a sport?' where do you fall in fandom?

Well, 4? I won't sit and watch a game by myself. What fun is that? But if I'm with others, sure! And sometimes I'll even make special snacks for the "big game" for my kids and I, but I don't remember the last time we watched a COMPLETE game before meandering off to do something else.

7. Share a favorite quote you think might inspire students of all ages at the start of a new school year.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

  1. I use my dish washer as a storage space for all my plastic ware. I much prefer having my dishes washed by hand.

I've never been to a drive in movie. Looks like fun.

  2. I agree with you...school pizza was my favorite, too. Funny the things you remember after all these years.

  3. We still have a drive-in theatre here too, it's less than 30 minutes away, so easy to get to and a lot of fun. We just need to be home one weekend to do it!

  4. My hubby does the dishwashing by hand especially the large pots and pans.

  5. The line in the school cafeteria was longest on pizza days! I loved that stuff. Now it tastes like cardboard to me.
Washing dishes? eh! I'd rather scrub toilets! But you are so right, it is frustrating when they come out still dirty. Or even dirtier! What's up with that?!

    Have a great week!

  7. My first visit to your blog. Love the State of Maine. We hope to visit Acadia National Park first week of October.
Being a single parent is difficult under the best of circumstances. Best wishes. I like your drive-in idea!
