TOS Review: Professor B Math

Isn't Professor B cute?

We were recently given Professor B's e-learning levels I (PreK-2), II (3-5) and III (6-8) to review for TOS and it came at a GREAT time!

Why?

Professor B is perfect for keeping math concepts sharp over the summer months without seeming too "school", and the 3 levels covered all my Saplings!

This is not a drill and practice program. WE TEACH MATH! - Professor B

What should you know?

Well, it's an on-line program. This is NOT a textbook or workbook, but problems can be worked out on paper. There is NO SOUND because Professor B believes that educators should be WITH their students during LESSONS to monitor how well the information is learned. These lessons usually last 10-45 minutes, but depend on the student (of course). And there's a free placement test if needed. To subscribe, it's $20.00/mo for level I, $35/mo for 2 levels, and $45/mo for all levels.

Our Thoughts
Where's the sound? OK, Professor B doesn't have sound. Instructors are required to read the lessons to the student to monitor understanding. It IS important that teachers know what concepts the student is struggling with, but around here I believe that independent learning and time management are also important skills for students to learn, and Professor B makes students DEPENDENT on an instructor to teach them rather than they teach themselves.

And when you're juggling 3 kiddos at 3 different levels, spending 45 on each lesson can really be a challenge in time-management.

My Saplings also didn't "get" the no sound thing and had a hard time "connecting" with Professor B. This lack of connection made working through the lessons more difficult and less enjoyable. They really like having sound!

For my Saplings, Professor B would work better as a SUPPLEMENTAL math program to review concepts they struggle with rather than a full curriculum. We're DEFINITELY more traditional Math learners around this "side of the mountain" and prefer math textbooks!

With all that being said, many of the lessons are short, uncluttered of visual distractions, and provide a good basis for a strong foundation in early math concepts. So, if your kiddos like on-line instruction, you might want to check this out!
