Hewitt Homeschooling is a company that "offers a balanced, flexible, and complete approach" to homeschooling our kiddos. Lightning Literature is an English program for students in middle through through high school.
White Pine recently reviewed Hewitt Homeschooling's Lightning Literature and Composition World History I for grades 11-12. For his review, we received a softcover student edition and a teacher's guide packet.
FYI
• Lightning Lit and Comp covers African and Asian literature and requires 4 books (which can be purchased as a complete curriculum through Hewitt Homeschooling or borrowed from your library). This is a semester long course.
• Lessons include: world and cultural views, historical fiction, symbolism, comprehension questions, background notes, writing exercises, and project and additional reading suggestions.
Our Thoughts
There are lots of great aspects of this curriculum. We found the introductory and historical background sections very helpful and interesting. These sections were important for our understanding of African literature. (We only completed Unit 1 of this curriculum on African Literature which is a WHOLE NEW AREA for us.) The comprehension questions were helpful to facilitate narration over the reading (or could be used in written form of course) and provided for challenging, thought-provoking discussions. There were also multiple writing exercises to enhance the literature.
However, White Pine just didn't "connect" with this curriculum. Perhaps because he's only in 9th grade? (Or maybe because it's summer and he isn't focused on school work? LOL) And unfortunately our library only had one book needed for this curriculum so exploring another book wasn't an option for us during the time period of this review. (It was going to take WEEKS to get additional books through inter-library loan.)
Overall though, we think Lightning Lit and Comp is a thorough, uncomplicated way to teach and learn literature that provides for a rich, detailed English course.
