Tuesday Coffee Chat: The Right Things

I'm joining Leslie from Time Out for Mom for this week's Tuesday Coffee Chat. (I don't drink coffee, but...) Why not head over and read how others answer this week's prompt? or link up your own? (And if you want to get a jump start on next week's link up, the prompt is: Are you holding onto something you need to let go of?)

Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?

Doing the right thing. If you do the right thing you'll be doing things right. See how that works? (At least in MY mind...) When all is said and done, doing the right thing leads to contentment and fulfillment of spirit.

Oh, I like things done right, completely, thoroughly. A half-swept floor, trash stowed or a grimy plate in the cupboard aren't pleasant reminders of something done wrong. Doing things right means getting the job done well! And a job well done gives a sense of personal accomplishment. These are THINGS though, and things aren't measurable compared to people, our family and friends, and even strangers and pets.

But doing the right thing? Well, it means caring for someone else more than yourself. It means doing what needs to be done because it is moral, valued, empathetic, helpful, insightful, life-enriching, Even if it's not for OURSELVES. It means love. Doing the right thing lightens the heart of burdens and fills it joy. Don't we all want joy?

  1. Interesting play of words, Jessy. I think I have to return tonight - after a few more coffees and having completely waken up - and read your post a few more times. But I am pretty sure, essentially, that I am agreeing with you about 'doing the right thing to do things right' :)

  3. that's a perfect quote!!
and I think you hit the nail on the head: doing things right on the personal level is more for self fulfillment and does have its time and place: but doing what is right is serving others - and I think that is absolutely where true joy and contentment resides. Thanks for joining me today! :)

  4. That is one of my favorite quotes!!!! The world is simple more beautiful because there are still so many that do right by others not just for themselves, but because it is what makes the world go round. Great post!
