The Homeschool Mother's Journal: The One That Starts Bi-Weekly Wraps

In My Life This Week
I decided to start doing these wrap-ups every other week until fall. It's SUMMER, right? Although I do LOVE these, I also love spending LONG days at the lake with the kids, picnicking, kayaking, swimming, reading. So, that's where you'll find us.

On this day at the lake, Cati found a friend to hang out with...and to cover a BROTHER up with sand. And Sam used his slip-ons as BOATS. Imagination!

And Grandpa and Nannie Lobster drove down for a visit and got right to work on some household repairs. I'm not very handy with a saw or drill. They fixed up our broken kitchen drawers and painted.

Things I Worked On
The entry closet! Although you REALLY can't see a HUGE difference, I removed 2 STUFFED trash bags of, well, trash, and another 2 of donates, and then organized everything. There's NOTHING on the top shelf now. Wonder what I'll store there?

My boys have A LOT of hair. Serious hair. Giving them summer "buzzes" are a PROCESS. Sam finds the vibrations from the trimmer uncomfortable, painful even, due to his sensory challenges. The mention of a hair cut, well, sends him into a "tizzy". But we got through it! Phew! Can you feel the LOVE from my boys in these before-and-afters?

Homeschool Happenings
Sam spent COPIOUS amounts of time building with Legos. Whole afternoons just spent creating, quietly, intently. His spatial skills AMAZE me! (Click on the link below to see my post on his camper.)

We signed up for the summer reading program at the library. Woot! For the first time they have an ADULT program too, and I can't wait!

We watched "Parental Control", "RV" and "Life of Pi" from Netflix. Are we the only ones that don't like "Life of Pi"?

With the help of Nannie Lobster, Cati painted her room. Out with the pink, in with the yellow! She's growing up. :sniff: :sniff: She learned to spackle and repair walls, "cut in" with paint, and use a paint roller (without dripping it all over the floor). I'm going to surprise her with a new comforter set when she comes back from visiting family.

We went strawberry picking. 30 pounds of strawberries! That night we had strawberry shortcake for dinner.

And Cati had her softball championship game. They lost 10-11, but it was a GREAT game. Considering the other team beat ours by a lot ALL season, the girls didn't make it easy for them in the final. Poor Cate got hit by the ball though.

I suppose all this isn't very "school like", huh? But most CERTAINLY some valuable life skills.

    1. My Dad was a lobsterman for 44 years. He retired last year, sold his boat and traps. It's a VERY PHYSICAL job and at 62 it was time to stop. He's a school bus driver now.

    1. I couldn't believe I actually caught her getting hit! I was trying to get one of her swinging! It hurt and she has a bruise, but she scored a run coming home a couple hits later!

  5. What a fun start to summer! I haven't seen the movie, but I love the book Life of Pi. I don't know how different the movie is from the book. Have lots of fun this summer and enjoy your off weeks! :)

    1. Now, see, I couldn't get through the book either, Lara. I tried a couple of time, but it just didn't interest me.

  6. I love seeing all the strawberries. My kids eat strawberries so fast that even when we go and pick them, I've had a hard time putting many away.

  7. I've been kinda sporadic with the blogging too, since there isn't a lot of school stuff going on. I can only say the same things so many times. ;-)

Summer with you looks like a lot of fun, even the closet cleaning. I need help with that. I was supposed to do the basement this week... it didn't happen.

Sniff, your little girl is growing up. They aren't supposed to do that before we are ready. We just redecorated Amber's room in January and she thankfully kept the walls pink. It's just more grown up now.

Even after therapy, Amber still has issues with hair cutting and hair brushing sensations. There's a reason she wears a lot of ponytails. I can totally understand how difficult it might be with Sam. At least he survived and it's nice and short for summer. :)

    Have a good weekend!

  10. Well done on that entry closet! Feels so good to do that, doesn't it? My kids are going on a couple of sports camps later in the summer and I'm looking forward to some serious decluttering then.

Your time at the beach looks fun. J(8) got buried in the sand today and my husband commented it was probably good for his SPD!

Gorgeous picture of the strawberries - yum!

  12. We just got our strawberries today. 20 lbs, some will be strawberry shortcake tomorrow night and the rest are becoming jam. We will probably get more. Me have some in the garden but they haven't started yet. Patience. So Sponge Cake or Biscuits for the shortcake?

  13. Wow you guys had one busy week. I love the strawberry pictures. We have been just as busy. I think this all is homeschooling. The kids are learning everyday even when we don't see it on paper. Can't wait to see what you do next week.

I've been limiting my computer time, so I am late in reading this...but I have to say that your wrap-up looks so joyful:) Your closet looks great, that lego rv is very impressive, and your summer fun photos are fantastic! Long days at the lake and strawberry shortcake for dinner sound perfect to me.

Love that last quote too- so true!
