Creative Crochet: Chicken Potholders

Did you know that I'm a CRAZY CHICKEN LADY?

Just over 4 years ago the kids and I incubated eggs for learning fun. After watching those cute lil' fuzzies hatch we couldn't part with them. Believe it or not, chickens have unique (and oftentimes amusing) personalities. We love 'em!

After watching this video, I decided that I had to make these chicken potholders!

Aren't they adorable? It took me a few days to find and purchase 100% cotton yarn (as acrylic can melt under high heat I'm told), but then I got crocheting. They're quick to crochet up and an easy project to bring along in a handbag to pass time while out-and-about.

I'm continuing to work on my son's red, white and blue ripples blanket, but breaks for these quick, fun projects break up the monotony of the same stitch and pattern over and over, row after row. I am anxious to finish up the blanket and start planning another for my step-daughter. In the meantime, what's my next project? I'm thinking a simple cell phone case for my new phone...

I'm sharing my crocheting creations over at The Philosopher's Wife (Mondays)Lucy Blossom Crafts (Mondays), Small Things (Wednesdays), Oombawka Design (Wednesdays), and Natural Suburbia (Fridays).

Get hooked! What are you creating?

    1. Thanks, Nicole! Crocheting gives me a creative outlet to share with others...and keep my fingers nimble. (They still don't know if I have arthritis in my hands and wrists or not, but I'm not waiting...)

    1. TY! I thought it was adorable! Probably not practical though as the potholder isn't very thick...but.

  5. The potholders are great. I am wondering if my SIL, who keeps chickens would like one. First I had better learn how to crochet.

    1. TY! Chooks...For the longest time I didn't know that elsewhere people referred to chickens as chooks. It's pretty neat to learn these things!

    1. I'm a country girl at heart. I am not fond of cities, although they do have their positives. I like visiting, but not living. I prefer hearing birds and frogs and be surrounded by trees.

    1. TY. I never thought I would enjoy chickens. After hatching out the remaining 5 original chickens the plan was that we would have them a week or so then give them to my Mom for her established flock. We couldn't give them up! LOL Although I don't want more, it's fun having them.

    1. They would! They're really not functional as potholders if the pans are super hot. They have "holes" and the yarn is thin. I've thought about doing some double or triple stranded, but haven't. They ARE cute though!

  10. Oh my goodness, those chicken potholders are adorable! I wonder if they would make a decent dishcloth. I'm going to have make one to see. Thanks for sharing this, Jessy.

    1. Oh, share! Would you make them square? I'm not sure how that would be done...I guess they could still be used as they are for a dishcloth.
