As Winter Marches On: January 7 - 13

In My Life This Week
Decluttering and organizing! It's a BIG undertaking, but I'm up for the challenge...even if its going to take me ALL of 2012 to complete. There's simply too much stuff here and too many unfinished projects! Check out my first entry about "Making Life A Little Easier" here (and my 2nd week will be posted on Sunday).

And poor, poor Rhodie! Getting THIS out must've hurt!

Rhodie's egg on the left and the LARGEST large size
egg we could find in the carton on the right.
Rhodie's egg beside the large eggs in the egg carton...
we couldn't close the lid!
It turned out to be our very first DOUBLE YOLKER!
Balsam Fir was QUITE surprised to find THAT in the
frying pan for his breakfast! And yes, that's the yolk
color of home-grown eggs.

Whatcha Makin' Wednesday?
Yummy homemade TWIX BARS from Lizzy at That Skinny Chick can Bake! Yes, really! We opted to DOUBLE the recipe and make them in a 13x9. Easy-peasy! (If you'd like the recipe - and you do! LOL - head over to That Skinny Chick Can Bake!) I'd like to say that I froze half for later, but that didn't happen. ((wink)) These WILL definitely be added to my new recipe book!

Homeschool Happenings
I'm SO happy with the reading progress that Balsam Fir has been making this year! With his lingering, but improving visual tracking issues, I thought it was going to be a long and winding "road", but he's surprised me! I'm amazed at the challenges he's overcome despite his SPD! (To read about SPD, click here.) Just check out this reading progress:

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons - Lesson
25. Balsam Fir started 3 months ago with Lesson 10, but
he flew through the lessons until about 25-30 when we
had to slow down just a teensy bit.

And lesson 63. He needed only 2
"read throughs" before moving onto
the next lesson.

I'm in the middle of a SCIENCE EXPERIMENT with Sugar Maple as the VARIABLE. Ha! She's TOTALLY into Astronomy right now, pulling out the telescope to look at the moon and planets when she can, researching constellations and then locating them in the sky, and reading, reading, reading about the planets. All on her own. So, I dropped Apologia Astronomy from our schedule. Dropping ANYTHING from our daily subjects is a huge step for me! ((wink)) But for now we'll "unschool" her science and "ride" her enthusiasm until it wanes.

White Pine continues on with Saxon Algebra 1/2, Saxon Grammar and Writing, American History, and Earth Science. Nothing new to report, but we did spend some time polishing up his latest writing assignment before he typed it into the computer. I think he needs to spend some time practicing his typing! ((hen peck))

Our highlight this week was our trip into Boston and a day at the Museum of Science. (That's why my Friday post is a day late! LOL) Check back for photos as I hope to edit them in later on Saturday.

Our Favorite Thing this Week
Going on walks with my girl and our dog! It's such a special one-on-one time for us to have "girl talk", explore nature and get some exercise before dinnertime.

Ponderings
Camping! Do any of you camp? Camper? Tent? I'm pondering whether or not to go TENT camping this season. We have a small pop-up, but there's just something, well, rustic and more natural about TENT camping. And Balsam Fir doesn't remember our days tenting. Ah, the memories! LOL

  1. Wow, that's a serious egg!!!!
And camping - this year or this Winter season? :)
There's a great campground in Freeport we used to go tent camping before we bought our RV. And LL Bean right there in case you need something even middle of the night :-D

  2. Wow, that is one huge egg! I have never seen one with a double yolk before. :-)

I so dream of having land someday with our own chickens, etc. We live in Suburbia and can't move far because hubby works here and now is not the time for anyone to be changing jobs, you know? :-)

That snack looks so yummy! I will just have to try that one out here. I know the kids will love it.

We are so wanting to camp this year. Don't know if we can afford an RV. We are looking and looking. Pray that we find something inexpensive but in halfway decent shape.

Hope you have a great weekend!
    Many blessings,
    Lisa
P.S. and kudos to your son on his reading assignments! :-)

  5. My 17-year-old still has lingering visual tracking issues due to a convergence insufficiency that was diagnosed when she was 10. She reads on an adult level, but she never reads books because sh finds it so frustrating. Do you have any tips?

  6. By the way, it's very cool to hear about how your kiddo is loving astronomy! My youngest likes astronomy too. What sites would you recommend for her to explore on her own? :)

  7. We have had a few eggs that big! Nuts isn't it?

That is why I haven't heard from you! We are hoping to hit Boston this spring for some fun! What did you think of the Science Museum? I've never been there.

Camping.. We love camping! Hoping to go on a camping trip this summer too. Back to a place in NH that we went the first time we took all 3 kids camping. We are pretty excited about it! :) We should go together sometime! LOL!

Hope you have a great week, can't wait to catch up with you!

  9. OK my 16YO son saw the Twix bars which are his favorite and now he's insisting I bake them so he can try them! LOL - thanks for sharing.

  10. We tent camp, but I have pop-up envy whenever we go. They just look more comfortable, especially when it's raining, as if often seems to do when we camp. :-/

Looks like a great week! I hopped over from Weird, Unsocialized.

  11. First of all, those TWIX bars looks delicious!!! Second, we are looking into camping, too. We used to camp (in a camper) when I was little and what great memories. Lots of simple fun and a spending time as a family. Tenting would definitely add to the adventure, but I'm sure the kids would love it. :)

    1. Hi Mama Ruby! I'm not able to find your blog and comment there. Perhaps I'll find it on one of the hops? Camping is lots and lots of fun if you keep it simple and have everyone pitch in. We have a blast!

  12. we also got our first double yoke a few months ago...pretty funny to watch my boys ....they just stood around the frying pan looking at it like it was the strangest thing they ever saw..you are lucky you took a picture!
I am your newest follower..pls follow back if you can!

  13. My Mom's chickens lay HUGE eggs. They are not double yokers but they are by far the tastiest eggs I've ever had.

  14. I heard the forecast is negative 2 for a low here on the coast. Our coop doesn't have heat at all and the chickens have always been fine but i have heard of large comb breeds getting a bit of frostbite on their combs in extreme cold. I think as long as they have plenty of grain and water they are ok. They need to eat a lot more to stay warm. I have been noticing the difference in the grain bill. ;-/

  15. Wow, I've never seen a double yoke egg and that egg is really huge!

  16. That is quite an egg! One of my grandfathers had chickens, but I don't ever recall anything so cool as a double yolk. As for camping ... I've never been. Never. Camping in a tent does not appeal to me as there are too many snakes around these parts and I sure wouldn't want to wake up sharing my sleeping bag with one! I've been really tempted to get a tent for my kids to put up in the house though so they could have some fun that way.

  18. Whoa...that's an impressive egg there!

Loving the look of those Twix bars:) Will have to make those with the girls this week.

We love to camp, but you would never get me out there in January or February...too cold!

  19. Those homemade Twix Bars look wonderful!!

My idea of camping is the nearest hotel.

  20. wow! That's quite the home grown egg, our chicken eggs were always much smaller than the avg you bought in the store, I'm sure it depends on breed as well. Neat to have a double yolk! Thanks for linking up to BTT!

  21. Thanks for linking up with BTT! We can't wait to get to our new house so we can have chickens! That double yolk is very neat!
